THE BACKSTORY: We broke with tradition this month by featuring a building on the cover. Chief photographer Joshua A. Bickel captured this beautiful shot of Main Library framed by purple petunias and roses during a sneak peek tour, which we took 18 days before the branch was set to reopen after a massive remodeling project. The project is a Big Deal for patrons-including many students and families-who rely on the Downtown library and its services.

Columbus Metropolitan Library's main hub closed April 13, 2015. Since that time, contractors knocked down walls and replaced them with windows, added a new entrance and a new park in back of the building, overhauled the children's area, gave teens their own space and made countless other improvements. As with many of its other branch remodels, the library placed a big emphasis on early childhood literacy and Ready for Kindergarten initiatives and will bring children's programming front and center to reach more families.

Main Library will reopen June 25 with a noon dedication and ribbon cutting, a grand opening celebration from 12:30 to 3 p.m. with entertainment and special activities (including the chance to get a commemorative library card), a PBJ & Jazz concert in nearby Topiary Park from 2 to 3 p.m. featuring Caribbean Jazz Sextet, and an outdoor screening of The Lorax at dusk. Author David Baldacci will speak in the new Grand Reading Room on June 26, but that event is sold out.
