The Scoop: Jeni's releases its spring collection and other food news

Today, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams released its spring 2017 collection, striking on a theme of inclusivity. The collection—named “We’re Not From Here. You Belong Here.”—explores the idea that while the ice creams may sound exotic, the flavors will be notably familiar. Genmaicha & Marshmallows, for example, combines handmade marshmallows with lesser-known genmaicha (a green tea made of toasted rice) to create a flavor profile reminiscent of a rice crispy treat.

In a blog post announcing the spring collection, founder and chief creative officer Jeni Britton Bauer writes, “It’s the foreign perception—the idea that these flavors are alien and hail from somewhere far away. But take a bite and you’ll quickly realize you know these flavors. You’ve had them before in some way.”

The new ice creams are being released in two phases. Supermoon (blue violet and vanilla marshmallow swirled together) and Orange Blossom Buttermilk Frozen Yogurt are available in scoop shops and online starting today. Three more flavors, including Genmaicha & Marshmallows, Cocoa Curry Coco and Osmanthus & Blackberry Crackle, will be released on Friday, April 14.

Northstar Cafe is now open in Westerville at 109 S. State St.

Veranico Kitchen & Provisions, a new fast-casual concept from the owners of Market 65, is now open for lunch and dinner at 401 N. Front St. in the Arena District. The restaurant is an evolution of the salad-focused Market 65 near the Sheraton Columbus at Capitol Square that also features a juice bar, panini, housemade breads and a bar serving beer and wine. 

Hot Chicken Takeover, which is expanding to Clintonville in May, announced that it is opening a third location at Easton Town Center (4198 Worth Ave.) this fall.

Cosecha Cocina, the contemporary Mexican restaurant from Grow Restaurants (Harvest, The Sycamore), is now serving lunch and dinner at 987 N. Fourth St. in Italian Village. Chef Silas Caeton’s menu includes traditional and modern takes on regional Mexican cuisine—the Pork Pozole Verde is an early standout—while the bar showcases agave-based spirits and South American wines.

Hai Poké, the tuna poké pop-up trendsetter, announced plans to open its first brick-and-mortar location this summer at 647 N. High St. in the Short North.

Gahanna-based brewery Kindred Artisan Ales has rebranded to Kindred Beer and plans to open a second taproom in Clintonville at 2950 N. High St. this fall.

Karate Cowboy Spirit & Sake, which previously contracted with a distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, announced that it is moving production of its sake-based spirits to Middle West Spirits’ expanded facility in the Short North.
