Weekend Picks: “Rent,” Butterflies and Anniversaries Galore

“Rent” 20th Anniversary Tour, Friday, March 22-Sunday, March 24
“Rent” actually celebrated its second decade in 2016, but seeing as it’s still one of the most popular and successful Broadway musicals, it’s no surprise that the anniversary tour has continued for almost three years. When it premiered, the musical was heralded as groundbreaking, not only for its music but also for its portrayal of the LGBT community and HIV-positive people. “Rent” may be a little older, but its story of friendship, love and loss is still relevant and uplifting. capa.com
Jurassic Park in Concert, Saturday, March 23
Another beloved artistic achievement is marking a major anniversary. Twenty-five years after the debut of “Jurassic Park,” the Columbus Symphony is offering a double treat for fans of the Steven Spielberg movie: a chance to see the original film in high definition on the big screen at the Ohio Theatre while the orchestra performs the iconic John Williams score. columbussymphony.com
Blooms & Butterflies, through September
Also celebrating its 25th anniversary is Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Blooms & Butterflies exhibit, the annual herald of springtime in Central Ohio. The conservatory will offer all manner of special programming throughout the season to honor the milestone birthday, but personal experience suggests an early visit for the best colors and diversity. fpconservatory.org
Hip Hop Expo, Saturday, March 23
Dinosaurs and butterflies aren’t the only ones celebrating a silver anniversary this weekend. Head to the Greater Columbus Convention Center for the Hip Hop Expo, which is also turning 25 this year. The expo is led by local artist DJ BHB to serve as a positive force for young people and to introduce the community to hip-hop culture. Programming includes an MC battle, dance competitions and performances from Transit Arts and The Paragon Project, a group of artists, musicians and poets from Fort Hayes. bhb4u2.wixsite.com/bhb4u
