Weekend Picks: Music, Mothers and Monologues

Huntertones, Friday, April 5

The Huntertones are based in Brooklyn, New York, but the band gave their first shows in a house on Hunter Avenue while members were students at Ohio State University. The group’s imaginative, horn-driven sound blends jazz, funk and pop, with unexpected touches of beatbox and musical elements collected while touring North and South America, Europe and Africa. “Black Mother,” Friday, April 5

Khalik Allah’s new film presents vignettes of life in his mother’s native Jamaica. As in his acclaimed “Field Niggas,” which documented life on an East Harlem street corner, the camera of “Black Mother” lingers on the faces and bodies of its subjects, pairing them with separately-recorded sounds and voices for an experience that’s been called “poetic” and “hallucinatory.” wexarts.org

Campfire Columbus, Friday, April 5

The Brewery District’s Vue Columbus will host the annual camp-themed fundraiser for Flying Horse Farms, the Mount Gilead retreat where children with serious illnesses get to escape for swimming, boating, fishing, archery and other activities. "The Vagina Monologues," Sunday April 7

Red Herring Productions’ annual run of “The Vagina Monologues” opens Sunday at the Franklinton Playhouse. The 2018 Columbus Theatre Roundtable Award-winning ensemble show is directed once more by Jordan Davis, who also directed the 2018 and 2017 productions. Columbus Monthly special sections editor Emma Frankart Henterly is acting in this year’s show, which runs through April 14 (8 p.m. through April 13; 2 p.m. April 14). redherring.info
