Weekend Picks: Flavored Nation, Urban Scrawl, and a Black Film Festival

Urban Scrawl, Saturday, August 24–Sunday, Aug. 25

Watch art being born as dozens of artists create large-format murals at the 13th annual Urban Scrawl, which takes place Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 at 400 West Rich in Franklinton. Some of the completed murals will later be auctioned to raise money to for the arts, while others will be weather-sealed and displayed in the neighborhood. The free festival will include food trucks, electronic DJs, break-dancing competitions and open artist studios.

Flavored Nation, Saturday, Aug. 24–Sunday, Aug. 25

From bison meatballs (Montana) to pimento cheese biscuits with pepper jelly (Virginia), Flavored Nation offers festivalgoers a chance to taste iconic dishes from all 50 states. It’s the second year for the two-day event at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, produced by GateHouse Live, a subsidiary of the company that owns Columbus Monthly. A $45 ticket ($55 at the door) gets you 10 food samples and six beverage samples, with an option to purchase more.

Columbus Black International Film Festival, Thursday, Aug. 22–Sunday, Aug. 25

The Columbus Black International Film Festival will screen more than 40 films from local, national and international black filmmakers at the Wexner Center for the Arts and other locations this weekend. Events include workshops, lectures, several programs of shorts and an outdoor screening of Robert Townsend’s 1991 film “The Five Heartbeats” on Friday at 9 p.m. at MPACC Boxpark , 925 Mt. Vernon Ave.

German Village Makers Market, Sunday, Aug. 25

The German Village Makers Market returns Sunday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the surface lot outside Flat 51 German Village. Pop over before or after a visit to Schiller Park, just two blocks away, to enjoy this outdoor artisan market celebrating everything handmade, from snacks and desserts to art, home goods and apparel. Enjoy food truck fare and live music while you shop this family- and pet-friendly even.
