Two corrections officers were injured and an inmate from Columbus later died following a struggle at the Correctional Reception Center near Orient in Pickaway County on Saturday.

Two female officers were injured while attempting to remove Michael A. McDaniel, 55, from his cell and he became combative on Saturday afternoon, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Both of the officers, whom officials said sustained serious injuries, were treated at a hospital and later released.

McDaniel declined a medical evaluation at the prison infirmary and later collapsed, officials said.

He was taken to Mount Carmel Grove City, where he died late Saturday afternoon, officials said.

McDaniel was admitted to the state prison system on Jan. 26 after pleading guilty and being sentenced to 16 months in prison for aggravated assault in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, prison officials said Sunday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident at the Correctional Reception Center, the intake center for the state prison system. Inmates are held there until they are assigned security classifications and then sent to other prisons.
