What Columbus Needs

Be sure to check out this week's cover spread on "What Columbus Needs," a look at the potential and potential problems with revitalizing this great city.

We point out the numerous improvements being/already made and analyze what could be done to make Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods even better.

Also, on the "Cast & Crew" page, each of us chimed in about our one wish for the city.

Here are five things I'd like to see in town...

5. Roscoe's House of Chicken' n Waffles No one who first hears about topping sweet Belgain waffles with fried chicken and hot sauce will support the idea. But one bite and you'll want to buy a local franchise of this California chain.

4. In-N-Out Burger This West Coast chain makes the best fast-food burger I've ever eaten. Donny, Walter and the Dude were right about these fresh, fattening and amazing concoctions. Mayfield, near Cleveland, recently got a Fatburger, so maybe there's hope for Cap City getting an In-N-Out.

3. Aldi in City Center People sometimes complain that this bargain grocery store has bad produce, odd products on special and a peculiar lack of many household items. Those people are classist. I can get four bags of food, pantry, ditty and other items for around $35. It's cheap, but I hate going up near Crew Stadium to shop.

2. The Columbus Supersonics As I found out (again) this football season, Columbus is the absolute worst major city for professional sports. Not only is the Ohio-sports TV schedule messed up (for Browns fans), but we have awful franchises in the least interesting pro leagues. The Supersonics have expressed discontent over their current situation and are pushing hard for a new arena. If their plan falls through, I say we make a stab at bringing them here.

1. Streetcars When I interviewed the mayor about his vision for a network of streetcars, it was hard for me to stay objective and journalistic because I really think having affordable and reliable mass transit like this would be fantastic. I mentioned to him that it needs to be open late. Cheap rides home from the hippest bars - snap!
