Song of the Day: Dizzee Rascal
Artist: Dizzee Rascal Track: "Sirens" Album: Maths + English
British underground emcee Rascal exploded onto the American scene several years ago with the bombastic, noisy, nearly indecipherable Boy in da Corner. The album sampled everything from Billy Squier to what sounded like power tools, adding to hip-hop noise far less orchestrated than what had appeared behind classic Public Enemy tracks.
For fans tired of formula, this was a welcome burst of anarchy. You couldn't understand much of his cockney slang through the layers of drums and electronics, but he was doing something new that moved.
This track isn't as dizzy, literally, as anything off Boy. But its clear narrative, fuzz and background noise - as well as the inclusion of police sirens - keep things just as tense.
