Alive's Cover Curse

Columbus Alive

Since its very first issue in 1954, Sports Illustrated has been accused of having a "cover jinx" -- that bad luck befalls people shortly after appearing on the magazine's cover, and teams picked in pre-seaon issues to win it all go on to lose everything.

Unfortunately, our batting average isn't much better here at the Alive. Yesterday the Columbus Destroyers lost to the hated SaberCats of San Jose in the Arena Bowl, ending a Cinderella run that started with an Alive cover story.

Here's a look back at other dashed hopes that started with Alive sports coverage in the last year:

Columbus Crew -- 7/6/06 cover Result: Missed the playoffs

Ohio State football -- 8/24/06 cover Result: We really got our hopes up...

Columbus Blue Jackets -- 10/5/06 cover Result: Another losing season (but we got a new GM)

Ohio State football -- 1/4/07 cover Result: Gator bait

Columbus Destroyers -- 3/22/07 cover Result: Lost title game

Columbus Clippers -- 4/12/07 Result: Cheap hot dogs still popular

Columbus Crew -- 7/5/07 cover Result: This could be their year!
