Artist: Young Wise Track: "Ryder" Album: The Cocky Mixtape Vol. 4

Plenty of shotgun blasts and volcanic eruptions pepper The Cocky Mixtape Vol. 4 - this is a mixtape, after all - and they're out of place. as usual.

You've heard them before, but that's not the point: None is as forceful or jarring as the lyric skills of primary author Young Wise.

Alternating between the snarling boasts of Lil' Wayne and the polished bravado of T.I., the Columbus emcee rocks through 25 tracks, offering minimal filler and much that's killer.

Beside cohorts Cridie Mac, Skyscrapa, Ty Wills and others, Wise (a.k.a. Wizzle) drapes a diverse collection of beats with tricky wordplay, compelling street swagger and clever rhymes quite rare among aspiring rappers trying to make known their name.

The mixtape format doesn't require the cohesion of a studio album, which allows Wise experiment with numerous styles. He ventures into many realms: chopped and screwed; hyphy; club bangers; ballads; and the dark regions in which Clipse has set up their operations.

Wise excels at most.

Even the tracks that don't bump as hard as "Ryder," "Lights Out" or "Light" are strong enough to evince the emceee's ability to adapt and transition from one track to another.

I'll put this up against DeVille's new favorite mix tape, Lil Wayne's Da Drought 3.
