Some people I really respect had real problems with the music of this local rock quartet, and I have no idea why. The Nuclear Children's new EP, Wear Black and Come When We Call, is an interesting romp through a wide range of popular music, which is a good sign for a young band releasing a debut album.

On the five-song record the band heads near the fuzz of the Apples in Stereo and deep into the territory of punchy garage rock, with singer Jason Matthew stealing the dark, confident rasp of Louis XIV frontman Jason Hill.

And with its bouncy rhythms and penchant for accordion, "In the News" appropriates the sounds of polka the way the Clash integrated reggae into punk. In fact, the Clash is the band's closest cousin, as both appear to consume different sounds in order to survive.

Matthew and bassist Rory Daniel's previous band, Asthmo, also shared this Galactus-like appetite, but the Nuclear Children have succeeded in honing various sounds into something unique and consistent.

The Nuclear Children will release their EP at Skully's Music Diner, 1151 N. High St., on Friday, September 7. Ghengis Green, Mors Ontologica and the Singles also will play. DJ Dave Espionage will spin records. Proceeds from the show benefit CD101 for the Kids.
