Song of the Day: Bird and Flower

Artist: Bird and Flower Track: "Penelope Pineapple"

Props to Slum-B-Q organizers for diversifying the offerings of their fourth annual festival and to Carabar for making it free this year. There are three stages of the best in Columbus music, along with NYC headliners White Rabbits, including a Solo stage that will highlight acoustic stuff.

If you read the Locals Only section in Alive, you're likely familiar with Chris McCoy, Tree of Fern and others.

One newcomer is Bird and Flower, who dabbles in all sorts of interesting, delicate things. Soft, acoustic blues are a recurring theme of the tunes. And I especially adore this track, "Penelope Pineapple," because of its fantastic, playful title and the obvious influence of Melanie, the Love Generation's kid sister.

She's not fond of frills, and most of the songs boast the intimacy (and the bare-bones aesthetic) of home-demo recordings. It's good, real good.

Be sure to check out her set and the rest of the lineup, which was posted today:
