Nature Notes: Audubon art and more
I've been a bit behind in my Nature Notes coverage lately - busy, hectic weeks, sorry - but definitely look for fun stuff in the Alive this Thursday. Tons of outdoor ideas and more will be included. (And next week, I'll be doing a great feature on the rainbow trout being released into central Ohio waterways this month.)
Art auction to benefit Whittier Peninsula Audubon Center
You've probably been reading about the great things going on down along the Whittier Peninsula, where a strip of forest and wetland houses about 200 bird species. I wrote about the progress of the new Metro Park and Audubon Center that will protect more than 84 acres of the wildlife habitat when completed in 2009. [Story]
I just got word from the people at what will become the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, the first education-conservation center be located in an urban area, that they're looking to raise public funds for the project.
"Columbus Audubon will celebrate art and wildlife while also announcing the community fundraising kick-off for the center at the Art for Audubon: Visions of Nature event, Sunday, October 21, at Cardinal Health in Dublin, Ohio.
Art for Audubon will feature live and silent auctions showcasing the works of local and nationally known artists. Art for Audubon is open to the public at a cost of $65 per person or $100 per couple. Attendees must RSVP by October 15. Call Julie Davis at (614) 523-2180."

Colorful fish come to central Ohio
Approximately 25,000 rainbow trout, measuring 10 to 13 inches in length, will be released into 25 Ohio waterways this month, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. "This annual stocking, provides excellent opportunities for anglers to continue fishing through the fall all across Ohio," said Elmer Heyob, hatcheries program administrator with the ODNR Division of Wildlife. The program targets small inland waters, including state and community park lakes, as well as other lakes throughout the state.
I'll have more about this program - and the steelhead season starting soon in northern Ohio - next week in the paper.
