Thankfully, no wardrobe malfunctions

Tom Petty has long been one of my favorite musicians, not because he’s great at anything, but because he’s really good at everything -- he’s a really good songwriter, he’s a really good performer, and he’s got that wonderfully distinctive whine that says well whiskey must’ve been half-off during happy hour. Basically, he’s just a good old-fashioned blue-collar bar rocker.

Tonight, he took the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show, and it looked like he loved it. It also looked like he couldn’t believe it. Needless to say, he didn’t sound great, but he sounded really good (and it sounded like he was really singing).

Hats off to Fox for putting a no-nonsense bar rocker on center stage for a supposed audience of a billion people. After all, this is the network that celebrates pop conformity and popular mediocrity with “American Idol.” It’s nice to see the Super Bowl give a nod to real rock made by real people.
