Song of the Day: The Mars Volta
So much prog is rock musicians trying to mimic the sound of outer space that the latest from Omar and Cedric, of screamo pioneers At the Drive In, is somehow refreshing. Maybe because The Bedlam in Goliath sounds like aliens who came to Earth and tried to make rock music. Maybe that's it.
This is the band's strongest work to date, in large part to its balance. Feedback and wailing noise is coupled with genius songwriting. Literary themes of the occult are paired with strong riffage from John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist who offers some of his strongest work yet the Volta. Definitely pick this one up.
