Song of the Day: Edith Piaf
Just watched the amazing biopic about Edith Piaf, in my opinion France's greatest musical treasure. (Sorry, Serge.) La Vie en Rose stars Marion Cotillard in the title role of a hard-living chanteuse who bore unbearable hardships -- childhood adandonment, growing up in a brothel, losing her love in a plane crash and health that declined severely by the time she reached 40.
Really, though, all that sadness, heartache, occasional joy and galavanting can be found in Piaf's music, which she made in various forms during her entire life and was likened to the song of a sparrow. The movie underscores what was so evident in her voice: She lived, thrived only through giving some of the greatest, deepest, most lasting performances of all time. The Voice of the Sparrow is the comp I first heard, and it's a great intro to Piaf's work.
