Song of the Day: Headlights

Recorded in an old farmhouse in Illinois, the latest from Champaign indie-rock group Headlights is a fantastic study in classic pop -- the gentle vocal undulations of Simon & Garfunkel; the homey introspection of Crosby, Stills & Nash; the whimsy of The Mamas & The Papas. A more recent touchstone would be The Magic Numbers, but this group feels more at home together. Many of the tracks wander gleefully amid bells and backing choruses, but a live-in-the-studio (er, farmhouse) approach reigns in and tightens things right up. I like lead track "Get Your Head Around It" even more, but I couldn't find a link to it. Apologies.

Head up: The band comes to the Beachland Tavern in Cleveland on March 3.
