Song of the Day: My Morning Jacket

Like The Hold Steady, My Morning Jacket has received credit for bridging the gaps between classic rock and indie rock -- two genres that often maintain unique sets of ethics and aesthetics, goals and boundaries. Clearly, the influence of, say, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Shins can be heard on their latest album, release June 10.

Mostly, though, the band has created something even better: a dark, swirling netherworld where boastful Southern rock sounds heady and orchestrated and the flippant tone of indie rock gets a needed dose of oomph. Rewriting rules is a daring feat, and some of the experiments on Evil Urges sound like aging rockers struggling to work within foreign, changing climates. But when they're on -- the two-part "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream" is a perfect example -- they among the coolest bands out there.
