Song of the Day: Jean Grae

I can find almost nothing concrete about the career, bio or offerings of Jean Grae -- one of the best female voices in hip-hop history and certainly tops to emerge since Lauryn Hill. She exists mostly in rumors, hearsay, myth and legend. Everything about what she does is, even by the odd standards of underground hip-hop and the music industry in general, bizarre. (For example: Why create an album cover for Jeanius that looks exactly like Raekwon's Only Built for Cuban Linx).

Still, her music is always amazing when it surfaces. Like much of her raps, this one is dark, deep and filled with both emphatic, complex wordplay and no-sucka battle quips. Jean Grae: The Evil Jeanius was released Sept. 30 by Babygrande and is a collaboration with production duo Blue Sky Black Death.
