Song of the Day: John Legend

I had little expectations that John Legend would prove to be what he claimed on the cover of his third studio album -- someone who changed. Legend, suave and talented, has never been one to break ground. He retreads it, longing mostly for the soul and R&B he obviously blared from childhood. Occasionally, he'll interface his smooth ballads or soft, jazzy material with hip-hop, but I'd hesitate to call it anything but nostalgia.

"Green Light," though, is something different, a sign the Legend has become confident about his about ability to work in contemporary styles. It uses his trademark croon, celebrity appeal and clear affinity for good beats. But he's largely left the past to itself. He's better for it.
