Nature Notes: Steelhead fishing is so hot right now

Literally. It is hot along the Lake Erie tributaries, where the fish run each year. My friend Tom Helbig, a Dayton outdoorsman, sent over these shots of his recent trip to the Rocky River in Northeast Ohio. He and his girlfriend caught a bunch of nice trout, one smallmouth and a huge carp.

They chose fly rods with specific patterns, but you can definitely snag these fish on spin- and bait-casting rods with artificial and live bait. Don't go without waders, because the water is going to be very, very cold. ODNR suggests these tips for wading safely.
