Nature Notes: Bass season is back on!

Just before the rains hit Sunday afternoon, I was waist deep in the Olentangy River, posting up at the Big Meadows Picnic Area at Highbanks Metro Park. Check this map for exact location. (Our graphic designer is not here today...)

This section of the river has some great riffles, eddies, structure and flow. Water clarity is almost always an issue on the Olentangy, but yesterday was looking decent when the water got moving. Be careful today and tomorrow, as rains will make things heavy and opaque.

On a good day, you'll get white bass that run down from the big water in Delaware State Park. I caught two of those on gray/green craw patterns drifted through the current. You'll also get nice smallmouth and rock bass. I snagged two beautiful 14-inch smallies using chartreuse streamers stripped down and across.

So, for all those following my blog since November, celebrate with me: I caught fish using my own flies for the first time. That was really rewarding. All that lonely time at my work bench wasn't totally foolish!
