Song of the Day: The Monkees
The original Nuggets compilation gathered random, obscure, forgotten, weird, scratchy and dusty tracks from the first psychedelic era, and it had more influence on the garage-rock revival of 2000 than anything else. It brought to light a fantastic era of experimentation and reckless abandon, a period of creativity that rarely comes along.
And unless you had powerful connections to the underground vinyl trade, you couldn't get most of the selections in the box set anywhere else.
This Los Angeles-centric installment is similarly full of hidden gems that no one knows about. It's a must for casual '60s rock fans and die-hard collectors. For every Buffalo Springfield song you might recognize, there's something completely out there -- like this spaced-out trip from The Monkees.
