Goodie Shop cooking up a comeback
The Tremont Goodie Shop could fire up its ovens again next month after a weekend rally and auction helped former owners repurchase enough equipment to get the shop running again.
Owners Paul and Doraine Cooper had blamed the recession for the decision to close the shop this month after 53 years. Sales had fallen $100,000 during the past year, they said, and they were facing higher supply costs and growing debt.
But spurred by public outcry over the shop's closing, Paul Cooper's sister-in-law, Debbie Smith, decided to try to reopen the bakery. Smith owned the Goodie Shop from 1993 until 2006. She said she's now in negotiations with Tremont Center management.
