If at all, Free is remembered for the smash "All Right Now," which held an easy-living, pedal-down ethos that would later be amplified and commercialized in a thousand inferior hard-rock ballads. It's a great track, but to get to know the group, I'd suggest another gem from Fire and Water, the band's 1970 masterpiece.

"Oh I Wept" sheds psychedelic wanderings and overzealous noodling from the blues base at the heart of rock music. In their place were skintight rhythms, Paul Rodgers' smooth, recognizable voice and a subtlety that set the band apart from peers simply covering Mississippi Delta standards.
