Throwback Thread: The Bar-Kays
After backing most of the great Stax artists in the 1960s, the group was asked to tour with Otis Redding. Sadly, four members died with the legendary soul star in a 1967 plane crash.
Trumpeter Ben Cauley survived the crash and rebuilt the group with bassist James Alexander, who was on a different flight. In one of American music's greatest triumphs, the reformed Bar-Kays started a solo career, charting on the regular.
So, yeah, their cred is rock solid.
The group explored headier, more mystical material on albums like Cold Blooded, but they'll always be known for the punchy, soulful tracks like this. The band lives up to the title of this track -- quite on fire and so temperatured for a long time to come.
