Local Love: Go Evol Shiki!

Note: This is the third of three Local Love features today spotlighting the bands that are reuniting tonight at Carabar, 115 Parsons Ave.

Tom Butler sounds so friendly and well-adjusted in person and on the radio that hearing him unhinged in Go Evol Shiki! is a bit of a twisted thrill. On the band's cover of "Psycho Killer," he manages to sound even crazier than David Byrne, and on originals like "Situation and the Subversives," Shiki's brash take on synth punk reminds me of Brainiac gone even more berserk. Not sure which of those feats is more impressive.

Butler has always regretted never putting out an official Shiki LP, so he'll be distributing 50 hand-screened discographies tonight at Carabar. That's a good thing because it would be a shame to see such a brilliantly bizarre band go undocumented. Butler said he's considering putting the music online too but leaning against it. Give the people what they want, baby!
