What To Do Thursday: Rumba rumble or Carabar crunch

Rumba Cafe, 2507 Summit St., has a diverse set of acts on the more accessible end of the rock spectrum tonight at 10. Kicking things off will be Hotel War. The blues rock power trio will be accompanied by soul singer Angela Siciliano this evening. Next up is Andrew Varner. The piano man makes his living banging out covers on demand at dueling piano bar The Big Bang, but he'll show off his originals tonight. I had kind words for his EP "Make Believe": "This is straight-up, unapologetic pop music for the masses, but it unfolds in a surprising variety of ways." Then Matty Monk, whose sound falls somewhere between the two — as sleek as Varner, but as bluesy as Hotel War.

They'll destroy you tonight at Carabar, 115 Parsons Ave. Two heavy locals will be on hand: Minimalist sludge slingers Bridesmaid and grindcore/thrash outfit MF Gnar. Chicago's slow-burning psych metal paragon SunSplitter completes this blistering bill.
