Weekend concert rundown: Don't sleep on the Dreadful Yawns

We jammed a ton of concert coverage into this week's Alive. Make sure not to overlook previews of Dead Prez and Roger Waters, who'll both perform Friday. Saturday brings John Prine, Black Prairie and The Legendary Pink Dots.

I want to quickly spotlight a show that didn't get preview treatment in print. The Dreadful Yawns have long been one of Cleveland's finest exports, but I hadn't seen them on a Columbus concert calendar for quite some time until tonight's stop through Ravari Room, 2657 N. High St. They used to be a pretty Byrds-y country rock band, but their more recent works were twang-free power pop exercises that I found nearly as stimulating.

The pleasant folk-pop now streaming at MySpace doesn't fit any of the previous molds. Curious to see how it all plays out tonight at Ravari. Plus locals The Town Monster and Blastronauts have more than a couple good songs between 'em. 10 p.m. show, $5 cover.
