One more thing to feel guilty about throwing away

A broken black-and-white polka dot umbrella has sat in the back of my car for the past four months. I need a new one but it feels wrong to discard an umbrella. Broken metal or not, it still keeps me dry. Solution: the HOOD.

Recycling Zychal "rescues" thrown out umbrellas and uses them to craft kitty toys, dog coats and a modern-day take on babushkas, the Hood. On their site, you can pick the umbrella pattern you want -- from solid colors to the Jonas Brothers -- and they'll use it to create whatever product you prefer.

The company accepts used umbrellas, so I'll be shipping my broken protector to Philadelphia for its next life as a chew toy or perhaps a fanny pack.
