Man killed in shooting last month at East Side apartment complex identified

Columbus police homicide detectives said Monday that the man fatally shot May 28  was John W. Walker Jr., 68, of the East Side.

A man who was found fatally shot on May 28 outside an apartment on the East Side was identified Monday by Columbus police homicide detectives.

John W. Walker Jr., 68, of the East Side, was found unresponsive by officers called around 11:40 p.m. on May 28 to the 3600 block of Allendale Drive on a report of a shooting, detectives said.  He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. 

Detectives have not yet identified a motive or suspect in the case. 

The apartment complex where the shooting occurred, Colonial Village, was highlighted in The Dispatch's series of stories in summer 2020 about violence in the city.

A study done internally by Columbus police also identified the area of the apartment complex, located off East Livingston Avenue, between Beechwood Road and Barnett Road, as the area in the city with the highest probability of getting shot.
